Au nom de tous les membres et associés laïcs de la Société des Missions Africaines, je félicite sincèrement le Père François Gnonhossou SMA pour sa nomination comme évêque de Dassa-Zoumé en République du Bénin. C’est un honneur pour François lui-même comme c’est aussi un honneur pour l'ensemble de la Société.
Je peux personnellement témoigner du fait que le Pape François a fait un bon choix. François est béni et possède les dons et les aptitudes nécessaires pour ce rôle. Après un apostolat de première évangélisation à Kontagora (Nigeria), il a suivi une formation de formateurs en France, puis il a été placé à la tête du District-en-formation Afrique (DFA). Il a alors été envoyé au Canada pour un apostolat rural. Le 30 avril 2013, il a été élu au Conseil Général. François a acquis une grande expérience qui l’aidera à relever les défis dans son nouveau service.
Au cours des deux dernières années, j’ai travaillé en étroite collaboration avec François au Conseil Général. C’est un saint prêtre, très priant, un serviteur engagé et loyal de la Société des Missions Africaines. Je n’ai aucun doute qu'il apportera ces mêmes qualités et vertus dans son travail comme pasteur de la communauté catholique de Dassa-Zoumé.
Avec son amitié et le sourire facile, François va nous manquer comme membre de notre Conseil Général. Il a joué un rôle clef dans toutes les réunions du Conseil et a un attrait spécial pour Justice et Paixet pour associer des laïcs à notre mission. Nous lui sommes redevables pour le bon travail accompli jusqu'ici. La perte pour la SMA est un gain pour Dassa-Zoumé. Il apportera son fort engagement missionnaire permettant d’élargir la vision de cette Eglise locale.
Le Conseil Général, en collaboration avec les membres du Conseil Plénier, va maintenant s’efforcer de nommer un successeur à François (cf. Constituions & Lois, 96§7).
Je demande à tous les membres de la SMA de se joindre à moi dans la prière fervente pour François au moment où il s’engage dans ce défi exigeant. Il reste SMA, bien que son rôle principal se déroule désormais dans le diocèse de Dassa-Zoumé. J’assure François de l’appui de la SMA dans son nouveau rôle.
Que le Seigneur le bénisse en tout, et que ce nouveau ministère l’enrichisse personnellement. Que sa présence là-bas soutienne l'évangélisation continue de cette partie de l’Afrique de l'ouest.

On behalf of all the members and lay associates of the Society of African Missions, I sincerely congratulate Fr Francois Gnonhossou SMA on his nomination as Bishop of Dassa-Zoume in the Republic of Benin. This is an honour for Francois himself as it is an honour for the entire Society.
I can personally testify to the fact that Pope Francis has made a good choice. Francois is blessed with the gifts and aptitudes necessary for the role. From primary evangelisation ministry in Kontagora, Nigeria - to formation training in France - to leadership in the developing African District-in-formation - to ministry in rural Canada - to membership of the General Council, Francois has gained vast experience which will all stand to him in meeting the challenges of his new role.
Over the last two years I have worked closely with Francois in the General Council. He is a holy and prayerful priest, a committed and loyal servant of the Society of African Missions. I have no doubt he will bring these same qualities and virtues to his work as shepherd of the Catholic community of Dassa-Zoume.
We will miss Francois as a member of our General team, his friendship and ready smile. He played a key role in all Council meetings and had the special briefs of Justice and Peace and the participation of laity in our mission. We are indebted to him for the good work done so far. The loss to SMA is the gain of Dassa-Zoume. He will bring his strong missionary commitment and perspective to the local church so as to broaden its vision.
The General Council will now work with the members of the Plenary Council to nominate a successor to Francois on the General Council [cf. C&L, 96§7].
I ask all members of the SMA to join with me in fervent prayer for Francois as he undertakes this demanding challenge. He remains an SMA, though his primary duty will be to the diocese of Dassa-Zoume. I assure Francois of the support of the SMA in his new role.
May the Lord bless him in every way, and may this new ministry be personally fulfilling as well as being a point of departure for the continuing evangelisation of this part of West Africa.
